The Madison County Bill
Madison County homeowners could get a tax break, funded by sales tax
Madison County; ad valorem tax; provide homestead exemption
Mixed: some good, some bad ·
This bill would let Madison County homeowners pay less property tax, but everyone would pay a new sales tax to cover it.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
This bill would give homeowners in Madison County a break on their property taxes. They would not have to pay property tax on the assessed value of their home. This sounds good for people who own homes. But, to pay for this tax break, the county would create a new sales tax. This means that everyone who buys things in Madison County would pay a little extra. This includes people who rent their homes, or people who just visit and buy things. So, while homeowners would save money, other people might end up paying more through the sales tax. The bill says people would get to vote on this new sales tax. This bill did not pass the House, so it is not moving forward right now. But if it comes back, citizens should think about who wins and who loses. Homeowners gain, but shoppers pay more.
