The Amish Businesses Bill
Amish businesses could opt out of paying for unemployment
A bill for an act exempting service performed for certain employers from eligibility for unemployment insurance, and including applicability provisions.(See HF 2607.)
Mixed: some good, some bad ·
This bill lets Amish-owned businesses stop paying into the state unemployment fund, meaning their workers cannot get unemployment money if they lose their jobs.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
Unemployment insurance is a safety net that helps you pay bills if you get laid off. This bill allows businesses owned by Amish people to skip out on this system because their religion does not believe in government insurance. While it respects their beliefs, it leaves anyone working for those businesses without a backup plan if they get let go. Workers do have to sign a paper saying they understand they will not get benefits, but it still takes away a basic protection for employees.
