The Medicare Supplement Bill
Michigan expands Medicare supplement coverage, bans insurer discrimination
Insurance: health insurers; prohibition on denying or conditioning coverage of a Medicare supplement policy; expand. Amends sec. 3829 of 1956 PA 218 (MCL 500.3829).
Good for everyday people ·
If passed, insurers could not deny or charge more for Medicare supplement plans based on health or age, helping seniors and others get affordable coverage.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
The bill would stop insurers from turning away seniors or charging them higher premiums, so more people can keep their Medicare supplement plans; without it, they could lose coverage or pay more.

The facts
What the bill actually says, no spin.
- Insurers cannot deny or limit a Medicare supplement policy because of health status, claims, or medical condition.
- The rule applies to applications filed within six months of enrolling in Medicare Part B, for both seniors and younger adults.
- Insurers must charge the same premium as a 65‑year‑old, not higher rates based on age or health.
- Policies must not include waiting periods or pre‑existing condition exclusions for qualifying applicants.
- All Medicare supplement policies must be offered to any applicant who meets the criteria, regardless of age.
- Insurers must show they are following the premium and coverage rules, and define which other coverages do not count as “creditable coverage.”
