The Affordable Homes Bill
New deadline helps build more affordable homes
Amending the date to provide written notice to a municipality of a taxpayer's election to be assessed under the low-income housing tax credit program.
Good for everyday people ·
This bill would change a deadline, making it easier for builders of low-income homes to get tax help, which could mean more affordable places to live.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
This bill would give builders of affordable housing more time to apply for a special tax break. Right now, they have to tell the town by October 1 of the year before they want the tax break. This bill would move that date to April 15 of the actual tax year. This extra time could make it easier for them to plan and apply, which might help create more places for people with lower incomes to live. Some might say towns could collect a little less tax money, but the idea is to help people find homes they can afford. Since it is enrolled, it is very close to becoming law.
