The Health Insurers Bill
Virginia bill would make health insurers pay for doulas
Health insurance; coverage for doula care services.
Good for everyday people ·
This bill would require health insurance plans to cover doula services, giving pregnant people essential support before, during, and after childbirth without paying entirely out of pocket.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
Having a doula can lead to safer births and healthier babies, but paying for one out of pocket is too expensive for many families. This bill would force health insurance companies to cover at least eight doula visits and support during delivery. It also stops insurers from making you jump through hoops, like getting a doctor's note, just to use your doula benefits. While it stalled in a committee, it is exactly the kind of push needed to make maternal care accessible to regular people.
