The Green Upgrades Bill
State taxpayers would pay for green upgrades to private buildings
Providing a tax credit for obtaining certain certifications by the United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system
Bad for everyday people ·
This bill would give commercial property owners a massive tax break to cover the full cost of making their buildings more environmentally friendly.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
Upgrading buildings to save energy is a great idea. But this bill forces everyday taxpayers to pay for it. It would let commercial landlords subtract the entire cost of their green renovations from their state taxes. When big businesses pay less in taxes, the state has less money for things like schools and roads. Regular people should not have to buy free property upgrades for wealthy landlords.
