Good for everyday people ·
This bill forces insurance companies to prove their computer models do not discriminate against you, but it keeps their actual formulas a secret from the public.
Our take
What we think, in plain words.
Insurance companies use massive amounts of outside data and secret computer formulas to set your rates. This bill is a big step forward because it forces them to test those formulas for hidden bias. If a computer model charges people more just because of their race or gender, the state can stop it. But there is a catch. The bill completely shields the companies' data from public records laws and private lawsuits. The state gets to see the math, but you do not. Still, having a watchdog check the math is much better than letting computers set prices in the dark.
